How to Paint Citadel Miniatures: Alpha Legion. Doing a compare to this guide to anything else you find out there on Google or YouTube.
First thing we noticed with this digital book is that it is in iBook format only, leaving out all the digital users who's preferred format is PDF. This is nothing new from Games Workshop they believe all of their customers are using the iOS platform. And with this misconception of their customers comes the rise of people downloading the illegal PDF version of a book, which we do not recommend any one to do. But we are not here to talk about that we are here to talk about Alpha Legion.
First walk through of the iBook it gives a quick painting guide to a Space Marine model, and the Heldrake model covering figures and vehicles. The beginning of the book gives the full list of colors used broken down by Citadel paint types: Base, Layer, Shade and Dry. And over all they are recommending that you have 33 different bottles of Citadel Paint to paint an Alpha Legion army. We should note here that this painting guide is to paint post Horus Hersey Alpha Legion.
The iBook breaks it down to each section layer by layer. For example the power armor is one section and it gives images of what it should look like when you are done. They also break down the Citadel Brush you should use when you are painting each layer. This is one of the best parts of the book it gives you the Citadel Paint and the type of brush to use. For any beginner this is great.
The part of the iBook that this book is really lacking is a bit of an explanation of what brush techniques that are used. When you look at guides you can find using Google or YouTube, most explain how to apply each layer or detail. If Games Workshop would have taken a moment to add that in this book could have been a complete guide. And this is content they have else where that they could have just dropped in.
We took a kit bashed model and followed the guide to paint an Alpha Legion Space Marine. It was a fun one off model to paint. With a price point of $5.99, you would be better spent finding some of the better guides out there on Google or YouTube, but if you need a decent color guide to paint Alpha Legion, this guide will work just fine.
