After 23 months Games-Workshop has decided to release a new edition of rules for the Warhammer 40,000 game. This edition comes with a lot of anticipation, not because the current rules are old and out dated but because the current rules just didn't work. From 4th edition to 5th edition players were excited for the changes. 5th had its problems but it was an improvement over 4th. The jump from 5th edition to 6th came with grumbling. Some of the changes were accepted with open arms and some of the changes were down right awful.
What to expect with this new edition? Well, game play is going to be the first thing to change obviously. Rumors are that there is a new psychic phase of the game and changes to how psychic powers work. Another thing to expect to see is the change in the local, national and international meta. Armies will be changing, as players will seek out new tactics and group cohesion. Rumors also are leading us to bonuses for taking units all from one army or faction and are moving us away from the force organization chart.
The 6th edition rules are going to the wayside on May 24th 2014, when the 7th edition rules are released. And with every Games-Workshop release there is a bit of fanfare with it. They have a few collectors edition box sets and fluff books full of pictures. They of course have their digital editions ready for players on the 24th.
